Gift of Prophecy

GOD’S WAY OF SPEAKING TO US.

  • Hosea 12:10: Since man’s fall into sin, God speaks to us primarily through His prophets.
  • Amos 3:7: God reveals His secrets to us through His prophets.
  • Numbers 12:6: God speaks to His prophets through visions and dreams.
  • Acts 3:21: God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
  • 2 Peter 1:19–21: Prophets speak as they are moved upon by the Holy Spirit.

HOW TO TELL A TRUE PROPHET FROM A FALSE ONE.

  • Matthew 24:24: Warning against false prophets in the last days.
  • Matthew 24:11: And many false prophets shall rise, and she'll deceive me.
  • Matthew 7:15–20: True prophets are known by their fruit.
  • 1 John 4:1: believe not every spirit, but try the spirit where they are of God:
  • 1 John 4:2–6: Messages of a true prophet are Christ-centered.
  • Isaiah 8:20: Prophet’s messages should harmonize with previous prophets, with God’s law, and with previous Scripture.
  • Jeremiah 23:16, 17: True prophet reproves sin.
  • Jeremiah 23:25-28,30-32: False prophets prophesy lies, they have deceit in their hearts, they cause God's people to forget Him for Idolatry.
  • Jeremiah 28:9: Predictions of a true prophet must be 100 percent accurate.--See also Deuteronomy 18:22 (Note: Is the prophecy conditional? Example: Jonah and the city of Nineveh).
  • 1 Corinthians 14:3, 4: A prophet’s words edify the church.

PHYSICAL TEST OF A TRUE PROPHET.

  • Number 12:6: Will have visions.
  • Daniel 10:8: In vision lose their strength.
  • Daniel 10:8: Strengthened by the angel.
  • Daniel 10:17: No breath.
  • Daniel 10:15: Dumb.
  • Daniel 10:16: Lips touched by angel.
  • Daniel 10:16: Speak without breath.
  • Jeremiah 1:9: God's word in their mouth.
  • 2 Samuel 23:2: Gad controls their tongue.
  • Numbers 24:4,16: Eyes open in vision.
  • Numbers 23:20: Cannot reverse the word.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:2-4: Unconsciousness of surroundings.

THE PROPHETIC GIFT IN THE LAST DAYS.

  • Ephesians 4:11: Prophecy one of the gifts of the Spirit.
  • Joel 2:27, 28: Prophecy to be active in the last days.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:7: God’s people who await Christ’s return are to lack none of the spiritual gifts.
  • Revelation 12:17: The two identifying marks of God’s last, true followers.
  • Revelation 19:10: The testimony of Jesus is the spirit or gift of prophecy.

HOW WE SHOULD RELATE TO THE GIFT OF PROPHECY.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:20, 21: Do not despise prophesyings.
  • 2 Chronicles 20:20: We prosper as we believe in God’s chosen prophets.

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE DO NOT OBEY GOD’S PROPHETS?

  • Acts 3:23: Ignoring the prophet’s words brings destruction.
  • 2 Chronicles 36:14–17: The tragic results of mocking God’s prophets.

DOES GOD CALL ON WOMEN TO BE PROPHETESSES?

  • Exodus 15:20: Miriam the prophetess.
  • Judges 4:4: Deborah, a prophetess.
  • 2 Kings 22:14: Huldah the prophetess.
  • Isaiah 8:3: Isaiah called his wife, “the prophetess.”
  • Luke 2:36: Anna, a prophetess.
