Often you hear Christians say, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". (2 Corinthians 5:6,8) to undo all the that the Bible would teach us about our mortal souls. The fact is that 2 Corinthians 5:1-11 is trying to teach us what genuine faith looks like. Versus 1 through 11 can be summed up by verse 7, "For we walk by faith not by sight". 2 Corinthians 5:1-11 Is saying that if you're in the flesh you're not with Jesus, and if you're in the spirit you are with Jesus.
The other popular argument against to the above Scriptures is the parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus" found in the book of Luke 16:19-31. In this parable, Jesus is using a popular false belief about the "Afterlife" to make a point. Jesus shows that in your life you decide your eternal destiny. During probationary time of your life on earth the grace of God is offered to every soul. But if you waste your opportunities in self-pleasing, you will cut your selves off from everlasting life. No probation will be granted. By your own choice you have fixed an impassable gulf between yourself and God. The parable of "The Rich Man and Lazarus" has nothing to do with life after death. Jesus makes several silly points in this parable. All of the saved cannot fit on the lap or bosom of Abraham with Lazarus. Abraham must be really big or maybe there's not that many saved and hell must not be that hot if Lazarus can dip his fingertips in the water to cool the rich man's tongue.
